Weapons Amendment Bill 2011
You may be aware that debate on the Bill commenced 8 September 2011 in Parliament and the Shadow Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Emergency Services, Mr John-Paul Langbroek MP, clearly state the view of the LNP with respect to the changes proposed by the Government. The debate is on-going and you will be interested to note that the LNP will be opposing particular provisions that unnecessarily target law-abiding citizens.
When it comes to managing Weapons legislation, it seems Labor is more interested in tightening the screws on law-abiding Queenslanders than addressing serious crime in Queensland. This Bill does nothing to address criminals committing crimes and it is the position of the LNP that the priority concern for the State Government should be to overhaul components of the Penalties and Sentences Act. This is to ensure that tougher laws focus on actual criminals and not innocent Queenslanders.
As it stands, the proposed changes in the Bill are restrictive and prohibitive to law-abiding citizens and the LNP acknowledge the thousands of stakeholders that have tendered their submissions opposing the Bill since it was introduced to the House earlier this year. Please be assured the LNP will oppose any unnecessary changes to the legislation, particularly increases in licensing fees, and will continue to fight Labor's bungled handling of the new weapons licensing system that has been a $7 million waste.
At this stage, I strongly recommend that you maximise pressure on the State Government to influence the outcome. In the mean time, if you'd like to read my second reading speech on the Bill, please click on the link below.
