Bligh should tell protestors ‘enough’s enough’
The State Opposition has blasted Premier Anna Bligh for suggesting Occupy Brisbane protestors who caused tens of thousands of dollars damage in Post Office Square should simply move into another public park.
LNP Shadow Police Minister John-Paul Langbroek supported Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk’s decision to clear Post Office Square today, and said the protestors shouldn’t be allowed to cause even more damage to another public park.
“I understand it will cost the Brisbane City Council $20,000 to $30,000 to repair damage in Post Office Square – an area which will be needed for Remembrance Day services in just nine days time,” he said.
“The State Government - which is facing a massive budget deficit and is hurtling towards $85 billion debt thanks to Labor’s mismanagement - can’t afford a similar bill if these protestors set up camp in Queens Park or Roma Street Parklands.
“The last thing the Premier should be doing is encouraging these protestors to occupy a tourist attraction that is close to a high density residential area.
“Anna Bligh shouldn’t be acting as these protestors’ tour guide around the parks of Brisbane, she should be saying ‘enough’s enough’.
“These protestors were camped out in Post Office Square for 18 days. They’ve had plenty of time to make their point. It’s time Brisbane’s parks were handed back to the people.”
