Gold Coast armed robberies continue under Labor
Two separate armed hold-ups on the Gold Coast overnight show the long-term Labor government has given up on maintaining law and order in Queensland's second city, the LNP said today.
LNP Shadow Minister for Police, Corrective Services & Emergency Services John-Paul Langbroek said after 20 years, the best Anna Bligh and Labor could offer was a throwaway line that more police would come next year.
"It's another hollow promise - a bit like the Premier saying there'll be no asset sales, there will be no fuel tax.
"No one believes it anymore," Mr Langbroek said.
"The Gold Coast is Queensland's second-largest city. We need action and we need it now.
"But all we're getting is too little too late from a tired, long-term Labor Government that's turned its back on crime on the Gold Coast
"The latest armed robberies involved shootings and violence. But, as usual, Labor's local MPs have continued to remain silent on the issue of more police."
Mr Langbroek said the government's own statistics told the story - with the latest Police Statistical annual report confirming the Gold Coast was the armed robbery capital of the State.
"In the space of three days we've seen teen gang robbers, an armed hold-up of a convenience store and now a bikie-related shoot-out.
"We need to be vigilant when it comes to armed robberies and armed violence.
"The LNP has promised a permanent major crime squad for the Gold Coast, based there, not a temporary taskforce that Labor has provided as a short-term fix."
"After 20 years Labor and its silent local MPs still can't get this right. It's time for change. It's time to get Queensland back on track.”
