Alcohol Interlocks for repeat drink drivers
LNP Bill Title – Transport Operations (Road Use Management-Interlocks) Amendment Bill 2009
Objectives of the Bill
This LNP Bill will introduce an interlock scheme in Queensland as currently magistrates do not have the power to order an interlock be installed on the vehicle of a drink driver.
It aims to improve road safety by introducing various preventative measures to curb problematic drink driving.
The Bill establishes a regime of alcohol interlocks, combined with drink-driving education and rehabilitation. In addition it inserts a “three strikes and you’re out ” rule for drivers caught with high level blood alcohol more than three times in five years.
The Transport Operations (Road Use Management-Interlocks) Amendment Bill 2009 -
- Requires the installation of an alcohol interlock on the second offence within 5 years where the deriver’s first conviction was a high level offence.
- Allows the fitting of an alcohol interlock where the driver is convicted over 0.15
- Allows the fitting of an alcohol interlock where it is the second offence between 0.05 and 0.15
